Shannon Campbell has a life that many an off-roader would envy: an accomplished career in racing, top-tier sponsorships including Nitto Tire, Monster Energy, and Currie Enterprises, and last but not least, a family that’s quite involved in the passion for off-road competition. To celebrate the life and times of this living legend, Nitto Tire started a YouTube series called “Shannonigans” that’s now breaking onto the online scene.

Shannon Campbell was recently inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF), alongside greats like Rod Hall and Ivan Stewart. His induction ceremony will take place in November.
We at Off Road Xtreme were treated to a sneak peek of the second episode in the saga, which we’ve now shared here today. In the above video, the Campbell clan packs up and heads off to southern Nevada for the 2015 Best In The Desert (BITD) Mint 400, one of the biggest annual off-road races here in the States.
The episode kicks off with Campbell describing the plan for the high-octane weekend, starting with qualifying, then contingency, and finally, the main event. “[The Mint 400] is a race I’ve always known as a kid, but I never got a chance to do it,” he comments. “It’s something different for us. We usually do Ultra4 races, where we’re driving through the desert, over rocks…but this desert racing speeds up to 130 miles per hour, so it should be a pretty good time!”
We totally agree with Campbell’s statement; without a doubt, the Mint 400 can be a good time, but it’s a harsh mistress to all who register, seeing as less than half ever make it to the finish line. Even in qualifying, Campbell’s Class 1500 buggy encountered some trouble with a transmission that needed replacing.
The 1500 buggy rolls through contingency.
After a fun stint exercising the 2nd Amendment at Machine Guns Las Vegas, the Campbells were back out at contingency, rolling down Fremont Street by hand and foot (no running engines are allowed until the end of the line). The drivers’ meeting capped off the day, and then it was time for sleep and preparation.
The green flag dropped on Campbell in the afternoon, and kicked off several hours of grueling effort to get the buggy past the checkered flag. Campbell wound up taking fourth in his class. “Everything went really good,” he says after the race. “It was an awesome time, I can’t freakin’ wait to do it again. The Mint 400 is everything it’s meant to be, and it is the roughest race I’ve ever raced.”
Well said, Shannon. To catch more of these and more Shannonigans, head on over to the Nitto Tire YouTube channel and browse through the series playlist.
