Bigger may not always be better, especially when it comes to selecting the right size tire for your Jeep. The folks of at Extreme Terrain put together a quick video to help you select the right size tire for your Wrangler.
In the video, Extreme Terrain compares a 33-inch, 35-inch, and 37-inch tire on three different Jeeps. In addition to the different sizes, they talk about how the tire will do on the trail and on the highway.
“When you go up to a larger tire you have a couple things going against you,” Ryan Huck from Extreme Terrain explained. “Not only do you have the height of the tire to keep in mind, but you also have the weight of the tire.”
The larger the tire the easier it is to roll over some obstacles on the trail. Larger tires usually end up to more modifications down the road. Gears, axles, and the powertrain are all affected by the tire size and weight.
Larger tires are beneficial off-road. On the left is a Jeep with 33-inch tires that when rolling over a stump hits the pumpkin. On the right is a Jeep with 37-inch tires which has plenty of clearance with the same obstacle.
The size of the lift kit also plays into how a Jeep will perform off-road in terms of clearance. “A larger tire will give you more clearance between the ground and the axle,” Huck explained. “A bigger lift is going to give you more clearance to the skid plates and your frame.”
