Like comedian Dave Chappelle once joked in a sketch, “Modern problems require modern solutions.” While it originally served as a punch line, he certainly had a point. These days, it seems like everything runs off of a computer, and Jeeps certainly aren’t immune. The JL and Gladiator, for all of their off-road capabilities, can bog down owners in alerts and warning lights. Not to mention, once you upgrade beyond the stock wheels and tires, it can cause problems for things like the speedometer and tire pressure sensors.
That’s why the FlashCal from Superchips is a great add-on for these Jeeps. Recently, off-roading YouTuber Justin B. McBride did a showcase on the FlashCal. The video goes over some of the interesting features of the device and what it can offer JL and Gladiator owners.
After touching on the super-simple installation process, Justin goes into detail on useful tips for the FlashCal. “Inside Vehicle Settings is where you’ll probably spend most of your time on the FlashCal,” he says. He points out the ability to alter the tire size, which the FlashCal accommodates over a wide range – from 26 to 40 inches in diameter.
Justin also points out the TPMS Warning Threshold. This makes it so that the Tire Pressure Monitoring System won’t trigger an alert unless it dips past a certain pressure, which the FlashCal lets users modify. Since running at lower pressure is common practice in off-roading, this will definitely come in handy for Jeep owners.
Other alerts the FlashCal works on include the Seat Belt Minder, for if you’re getting in and out of the Jeep for short bursts of driving. Another one is Auto Start Stop, which we all know and “love.” Obviously, this one is a big headache, as it will shut off the engine if you come to a stop. The FlashCal alone doesn’t entirely take care of this issue, but Justin’s video shares a helpful tip on how to completely neutralize it.
The FlashCal works on a variety of electronic parameters on Jeeps. For example, it adjusts the tire pressure monitoring system threshold so you can run on a lower tire pressure without triggering a dashboard alert.
As you can see, the Superchips FlashCal offers a lot in a small package. It’s perfect for Jeep owners that want more accurate readouts on their instruments, and fewer warning lights on the dashboard.
