After many months of rumors, leaks, renderings, and pictures, the next generation JL Wrangler is finally here. As expected, Jeep unveiled this new Wrangler at the LA Auto Show on November 29th. Ryan Huck from Extreme Terrain showed that almost every single major leak that happened this year ended up being correct.
To start things off on the exterior, the JL is fairly similar to to the JK. The front end is redesigned, the fender wells are larger, there is a very strong body line going down the length of it, the windshield is much more slanted, and the windows are significantly taller. All of this adds up to a much more modern design with a hint of luxury with those tall G-Class looking windows.
Under the hood, we have four engines to choose from including the JK’s 3.6-liter Pentastar engine. The first of these new engines is a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that outputs an impressive 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
This engine will probably be great for the smaller two-door JL Wrangler but might be a little lackluster in the larger four-door. The second new engine is the 3.0=liter EcoDiesel that is already used in the Ram pickup truck. This new diesel option outputs 260 horsepower and a beastly 442 lb-ft of torque, all while getting 30 mpg. In 2020 there will be a plug-in hybrid powertrain which sounds kind of lame, but the torque available from those electric motor will be a game changer off-road.
There are some other cool new things about the JL too. The Rubicon has an 84:1 crawl ratio and when combined with the torquey new engines will result in great crawling, there is a fixed hardtop with a power soft top offered, the standard soft top will be much easier to take on and off by yourself, and many other cool new things.
