With the 2015 Dakar Rally in full swing, the competition is at an all-time high as drivers push the limits of their mind, body, and equipment to attain the coveted win in their class. As a race that takes nearly two weeks to complete, crews, drivers, and support staff alike are all pushed to their breaking point to keep the cars competition worthy and limit problems.
With the lack of sleep and constant focus to push the cars harder and harder to win, mistakes are a matter of time. Unfortunately for Matt Campbell, driver of the El Martillo Racing truck, a mis-marked caution marker on the GPS caused a truly spectacular crash in the seventh stage of the rally (Iquiqe to Uyuni) immediately following the Mercedes team crashing in the same exact location!
According to early reports, there was a known obstacle on the race course that was rated as a “Level 4” obstacle, meaning it was something that needed a severe reduction of speed and the utmost of caution to navigate. According to early speculations, the obstacle was mis-marked on Campbell’s GPS as a “Level 2” obstacle causing him to drive into the section with a much higher rate of speed than he should have.
What resulted from the high speed crash was one of the worst high speed wrecks we have ever seen as the truck somersaults through the air and eventually comes to rest upside-down and on fire.
Both the driver and co-driver survived the accident, thankfully, and were taken to local hospitals for further evaluation. Check out the video of the action and send some good thoughts to those involved in these crashes as they recover!
