Video: Hoonigan Ken Block Gymkhana NINE

Rally racing isn’t always off road and Ken Block’s Gymkhana series isn’t always in the dirt but this video is just too awesome not to share. Block, a champion FIA World Rallycross racer, flings a heavily modified 2016 Ford Focus RS-RX around various parts of Buffalo, New York with a camera following. What’s not to love?

A stunt from last year's Gymkhana 8 video. This only scratches the surface of the craziness in the Gymkhana series.

Ken Block is a very accomplished person. He was a co-founder of legendary DC Shoes and has been a part of many extreme sports including motocross, skateboarding, and snowboarding. For over ten years now, Block has been tearing up asphalt and dirt in rally cars. After selling off his portion of DC Shoes, Block focused on a new brand of automotive enthusiast apparent and swag, Hoonigan Industries. The company is the source of slogans like “Kill All Tires” and “Hoon Responsibly.”

In today’s fast paced and content-addicted world, Hoonigan developed their Gymkhana video series. Gymkhana is not unique to the Hoonigan series, Wikipedia describes Gymkhana as “similar to autocross, the goal of gymkhana is to achieve the fastest time possible; memorizing the course is a significant part of achieving a fast time. The name is loaned from the equestrian discipline of gymkhana.” Previous Hoonigan Gymkhana videos features have been off the charts popular. Crazy stunts, amazing vehicles and impeccable driving skills.

Nothing like drifting around a Ford Raptor hanging from a helicopter.

In the video above, you’ll see the amazing talent that Block has behind the wheel. Let’s talk about the finely crafted car he’s driving. The car started life as a 2016 Ford Focus RS-RX and was built as a joint effort between Hoonigan, Ford Performance and M-Sport of the United Kingdom. The no. 43 car is Ken Block’s rallycross racecar and is absolutely astounding.

All the body seams were welded and reinforced to keep it from tearing apart during the abuse of honing and racing. M-Sport designed and installed an FIA World Rallycross approved roll cage. M-Sport and Ford Performance worked together on a custom body design to set the car apart from its humble beginnings.

Under the hood, the Hoonigan Focus has a modified Ford EcoBoost engine packing 600 horsepower and can launch from zero to sixty in less than two seconds. Much of that is thanks to the Sadev 6-speed sequential transmission that feeds Sadev center and rear differential units, making the car a true all-wheel drive monster. M-Sport built a full custom set of skid plates under the car the protect all the goodies.

As a safety measure for this stunt, the car was rigged with a scuba system. Thankfully, Ken Block did not need to utilize it.

For traction and control, the car uses a Reiger Racing Suspension and Brembo brakes, both front and rear. Through the video, you’ll often see interior footage that shows Block using a hand brake, aiding in the pursuit of drifts. Smoke is generated by a set of Avon Rallycross controlled tires wrapped around OZ 17-inch by 8-inch wheels.

Rallycross is no joke. Ken Block and the Hoonigan Division are doing an awesome job of bringing attention to it in the United States where rallycross isn’t as prominent as Europe. Hoonigan has been putting out a Gymkhana video on a yearly schedule, we can’t wait to see the next one.
