When it comes to trucks, the most commonly compared stat between makes and models is how much it can tow. Even when consumers have no intention of towing near the max of the vehicle, knowing the big number is a confidence booster for knowing their truck can handle what they drag behind it. Ford has made a serious statement using a huge tow weight number.

Ford has already made big strides with smaller engine tow ratings with their newer Ecoboost engines and the all-new Hybrid F-150 that is hitting dealer lots soon. To officially announce how serious they are about producing an all-electric F-150, they’ve hooked it up to one million pounds worth of train cars with 42 F-150s lined up nearby. The 42 number represents 42 years of America’s best-selling truck.

In the video above, you’ll start by seeing the all-too-common car commercial style. Ford brought in non-actors that are Ford owners, and their trucks, for the demonstration. The onlookers apparently have no idea what is about to happen. Dramatic music and unexplained clips of a heavy-duty tow strap being hooked up leads into Linda Zhang, the F-150 Chief Engineer, walking out to greet the group they have invited.

Linda explains the plan. She explains that the 10 double-decker rail cars weigh over one million pounds and the length of the 42 trucks is 1,000 feet. The guests aren’t too sure the “prototype” as Linda refers to it, will be able to do the stunt. When she drops the all-electric bomb, they are stunned.

As viewers, we know that the truck is going to pull the train cars. Ford wouldn’t release a video like this of it failing. The all-electric truck does indeed move the cars, getting up to a top speed of 4.5 miles per hour before reaching the finish line. But wait…there’s more. They then load all 42 trucks into the cars, pushing the weight up to 1.25 million pounds.

Unfortunately, Ford hasn’t disclosed anything about the truck other than it being a prototype all-electric model. Near the end of the video, Linda says “This prototype will help us deliver the all-electric F-150 in the coming years.” No dates, no specs. We’ll have to wait for more information but knowing it is coming is a huge deal.
