Video: Build It With What You’ve Got–A Mad Max Inspired Buggy

As gearheads, we’re pretty used to putting things together. Those things we put together weren’t always intended to be together when they were originally built, either. Late model engine swaps, modern suspensions and even interior swaps make for some interesting conversions.

But what happens when you don’t have a catalog or website to peruse when you absolutely need to build something? In a very Mad Max fashion, YouTuber “Kurtscottage” shows exactly what you’d do: build it however you can with what ever you’ve got laying around.

In the video above, you’ll see how Kurt cobbled together what he calls a “Post-Apocalyptic Dune Buggy” out of random bits and pieces he had sitting around on his property. It started with a Karmann Ghia pan he got from a gentleman that told him it had been sitting in a field for 35 years. From the looks of what is left of the pan and seeing what the rust has graciously removed from it, we would believe that such a claim is fairly accurate.

What is left of the two cars has been joined together using various lumber pieces that have been, presumably, tied to integral portions of either vehicle. Kurt estimates the collection of parts scoots about with 60 horsepower.

At the point of this video, there are no brakes installed, though he does mention that he plans to eventually add them. A steel shift rod extends to the back where it connects to the original equipment shifter that has been moved forward as far as it could with the original transmission shift cable.

The hodge-podge of a car is most certainly not pretty, but it moves under its own power. “I’m just hoping it doesn’t fall apart…” mentions Kurt as he smashes down the grass and slings up a little mud. “This thing is awesome.” In a way, we’re envious of what he has put together. With a totally different mindset than most of use when building out projects, Kurt has made himself something he can be proud of.

Kurtscottage has quite a few videos he has shared over the last four years. The videos include random clips of engine cold starts, couch fires as well as interesting bits about homemade generators, homebuilt heaters and a bunch of other homemade innovations. There are several videos on other vehicular creations he has done over the years as well. Go check it out here.
