If you have never been to King of The Hammers (KOH), then you need to get on down there as soon as you can. It’s the biggest thing in rock racing this country has to offer! The 2015 event began this week in Johnson Valley (about an hour’s drive north of Twentynine Palms), California, with all types of supporting events such as King of The Motos, one of the hairiest desert motorcycle races you can imagine, but the big race between a couple hundred unlimited desert race cars will take place Friday, February 6, 2015.
One of the most popular warm-up events is the Vision X ULTRA4 vs. SRRS East/West Shootout presented by Sway-A-Way, and for the second year in a row, it went down on the Monday night of King of The Hammers’ week. The East/West Shootout is a race up Back Door, one of the more treacherous canyon climbs on the KOH course (at night) between the southern rock bouncers of SRRS (Southern Rock Racing Series) and the rock racers of Ultra4 Racing.
Spectators lined the canyon to see Ultra4 drivers such as Bill Baird, Eric Miller (2012 King of The Hammers champion), and southern rock bouncers like Timmy Cameron and Richie Keith hurtle their machines up one of the roughest spots on Earth. As you will witness in the video above, rock bouncer Bobby Tanner from Tennessee took the fastest time up Back Door with an amazing 22.547-second run. He not only won the Shootout, but gave the crowd a surprise ending. Wait for it!
