Moments before the beginning of the 2015 King of The Hammers, we caught up with Bill Baird in the pits who at 65 years old continues to compete in professional motorsports. What began as stock car racing in 1990, including a championship season in the 1999 ARCA series, has morphed into a full-fledged off-road racing effort. With all of his experience, we asked Baird what his biggest advantage is and he explained, “The one thing I have coming out of the stock car racing is getting the adrenaline going. And one thing I think I still have over a lot of the young kids coming out here is I get in the car and I can control my heartbeat and breathing.”

While racing is typically a young man’s sport, especially if there is no roll cage involved, we had to ask Baird what it’s like to continue to race. Baird provided some valuable insight by explaining, “I get in the race car and if I have any pains, they go away, it’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” This is a true testiment to the power of competition and adrenaline and the positive effects it can have on an individual!

Finally, we had to ask him what his main goal was with competing in the King of The Hammers year after year. Spoken like a true competitor, Baird explained, “I don’t want second, I don’t want third, the only thing I want is to win this race.”
