The Ford SVT Raptor took the world by storm when it debuted in 2009 as a 2010 model. Amidst a gasoline price spike and down-on-its-luck American economy, the four-wheel-drive beast of a pickup was the shot in the arm that Ford needed to keep its truck game afloat.
Buyers were quick to get their hands on the Raptor and see what all it was capable of. Advertisements boasted about the long-travel suspension, massive V8, Fox Racing shock absorbers, and rear locking differential, among other features. The Raptor was all about off-roading, although reality painted a different picture.
Customers soon started fielding grievances, and one of them was the rear end. Reports of clunking noises and deteriorating bearings popped up on forums; Ford, for its part, quietly advised people to take it easy on the truck, and more or less washed its hands of the matter.
This all changed quite recently, as Currie Enterprises stepped up to the plate to deliver its new F9 full floater rearend. Addressing the issues head-on, the company’s product went full-bore to offer Raptor owners an axle they could trust.
“This F9 rearend incorporates many features only found on racecar rearends, such as 35-spline axles, four-inch diameter axle tubes, and full floating hubs,” says John Currie. “Along with all those other features, your factory disc brakes still bolt on, your ABS system still plugs in, and your stock driveshaft still bolts right on.”
In addition to these features, the F9 also has reinforced bulkheads, 4140 heat treated 2.5-inch spindles, and 4340 heat treated drive plates. The rearend’s full floating hubs minimize stress to the axle shafts, while additional durability can be found in the heavy-duty skid plate that’s available separately.
