Crashes are inevitable in the world of off-road racing. It’s not a matter of if you will crash; it’s a matter of when. For TORC Series newcomer Arie Luyendyk Jr., the inevitable occurred earlier this month.

If you happened to catch the TORC Series season-opener in Primm, Nevada, the weekend of April 5, 2014, you probably know exactly what we’re talking about. Battling Mike Jenkins at the first-turn jump, Luyendyk’s truck ended up flying farther than Jenkins’ truck initially, but it took contact from his competitor mid-air, causing Luyendyk and his truck to tumble violently off the course.
If you were not there in person, you can watch the entire action-packed race if you wish (it is pretty awesome), or simply fast-forward to see the tumbling crash occur at 2 hours, 39 minutes in the TORC video above.
While it seems incredible that Luyendyk escaped with only a broken left collarbone after getting his arm wedged against his seat, according to the Indy Star, Luyendyk’s minor injuries seem even more unrealistic based on footage captured by Replay XD inside Luyendyk’s truck, thanks to a dash cam. Posted on Luydyke’s Facebook page, you can check out the chilling footage here.
Seemingly dazed and in pain after the crash, Luyendyk was removed from the race. He underwent surgery for his broken collarbone (which luckily was a diagonal break making it easier to fix) on Tuesday, April 8. He reportedly started physical therapy on Wednesday, April 9 and hopes to be back to racing as early as the weekend April 25-26, when the TORC Series hits Charlotte, North Carolina for its second race of the 2014 season.

The son of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, Luyendyk Jr. started dabbling in TORC racing last year before coming on full-time for 2014.
