Mickey Thompson is a name well-known in the off-road and drag racing market. Now, the company is making a product ideal for the UTV and powersports market. Enter the Baja Pro X, the latest tire from Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels.
We spoke with Jason Moulton, Senior Product Development Manager at Mickey Thompson, to learn more about the tires. “The vision behind the Baja Pro X was to build the ultimate off road tire that could be not only be used in competition, but a tire that had the traction to allow the enthusiast to push their UTV’s to the limit,” he explained. “The design goals were traction, durability, lighter weight and then more traction!”
The Baja Pro X is all about gaining grip in slippery situations, which is where its design features came into play. These include dual decoupling grooves, Sidebiter sidewall blocks, and Tread Biter cleats. “The dual decoupling grooves allow the Sidebiters to flex and conform around obstacles for additional traction and stability,” explained Moulton. “The Sidebiters not only add to the traction, but also offer additional protection. They do this in the upper sidewall area, which is very susceptible to damage. The Tread Biter cleats protrude above the tread surface to provide additional biting edges and improve traction on irregular surfaces.”
Another key feature of the Baja Pro X is its Pro-Tech Construction, which is a proprietary method of tire construction unique to Mickey Thompson. “The point of Pro-Tech Construction is to allow the tire to flex and provide traction while also maintaining the durability required in off-road conditions,” said Moulton. “It also allows us to build the tires lighter for improved vehicle performance.”
