The auto industry is all abuzz about electric vehicles these days, and if you think this is just another passing fad you’d better think again. Tesla has shown that electric cars can be mind-bogglingly quick, and regular people are finding that even short-range EVs like the Nissan LEAF can be remarkably useful in everyday driving. But what about people who need some versatility and off-road capability? Is there an EV for them?
Thanks to Birmingham, Alabama-based TORQ, now there is. The TORQ Very Light Electric (VLE) ATV combines a quiet-but-powerful electric motor with a versatile and capable design inspired by midget race cars and hot rods.
Available in side-by-side and single-seat versions, the TORQ VLE comes with your standard pedal-and-steering wheel setup found on common automobiles. It’s powered by an 18 horsepower 48-volt AC brushless motor from Advanced Motors and Drives hooked to a Curtis 1236 450 Amp AC motor controller. Top speed is limited to 25 MPH, but it can operate for up to 3.5 hours, with a charge time as low as 5 hours, proving once again that batteries continue to be the big limiting factor for EVs.
But there are some huge advantages to going electric off-road, especially if you’re the hunting type. Typical ATVs announce themselves to creatures large and small for miles around, but the quiet operating nature of electric motors means you can sneak up on unsuspecting prey without giving yourself away. It’s also much easier to maintain, with no fuel to spill or oil to change. Just plug it in where you’re done and you’re good to go. Pricing starts at $14,500 for the single seat version and $15,500 for the two-seat model.
