Driver Ryan Millen and the crazy cool Toyota RAV4 rally racer are proving to be a force to reckon with in the Rally America National Championship 2WD class. The duo just brought home the class winner’s trophy at the hotly contested Ojibwe Forests Rally. Beyond the class win, the Ojibwe Rally marked the first time the RAV4 made the overall podium, getting the best of more powerful, highly modified competitors, some with more drive wheels, and coming home third overall.
Millen and co-pilot Christina Fate battled for three high-intensity hours for the win and set up a big last race, winner-take-all event at the season-ending Lake Superior Performance Rally. Millen and Fate are tied for top points in the 2WD class with Cameron Steely. The Greely, Colorado racer drives a Ford Focus and has three class wins in 2016, but was a DNF in last year’s Lake Superior event.
“This was a pretty solid win,” said a cheerful Millen. “It’s crazy to spend a whole year trying to be as consistent as possible, and now it’s come down to one race.” Millen and the RAV4 team were quick to credit the strength of their performance to some effective setup and testing time with the suspension experts at Tein.
Forget anteing up; it’s all hands all-in for the final race of the 2016 season, the Lake Superior Performance Rally, which will be held in Houghton, Michigan on October 14. It’s a winner take all for the national championship. Rally racing doesn’t get any better than this.
