After running four trails during Easter Jeep Safari on its all-new, off-road-oriented Trail Blade Boss Green Label tires, we caught up with Atturo Tires to hear how this remarkable rubber was performing.

Being that these tires are just now coming to market, we had a plethora of questions for Atturo Tires Marketing Specialist, Collin Mikottis. Fortunately for us, the Atturo team enjoys talking about tires, so we were able to glean a nice glob of information about the development, production, and performance of these super-sticky non-DOT approved compounds.

Our brief video interview with Collin reveals a lot (note the nifty backstory behind the “Blade” name), but there is much to be discussed that was not covered during our chat at Easter Jeep Safari.

So as we got a first-hand account of how these all-new off-road specific soft compounds performed, a series of notes were taken, which were in turn followed by an email Q&A session shortly thereafter.

Here is what we learned about the Trail Blade BOSS: Green Label line, and why these tires should be toward the top of your list of “must-test” off-road rubber.

Rollin’ Over Rocks and Grippin’ Gravel, Trail Blade Boss Style

ORX: Utilizing the Trail Blade BOSS tread block pattern is undeniably great for a variety of situations and terrain, but what are the cost savings for the consumer (if any) that are associated with utilizing this preexisting tire mold?

Atturo Tires: Utilizing the existing Trail Blade BOSS tread pattern provides a lot of advantages for the consumer. This includes a lower cost compared to many other “sticky” tires on the market today. Using the same tooling allowed us to provide a tire that consumers are familiar with and know will perform well. The new sticky compound allows them to tackle that tougher line!

Some Science Behind Trail Blade Boss Sticky Tires

ORX: What made you guys settle on a 10-percent stickier compound? Why not 15-percent, or less? Say, down to just 5-percent for greater longevity?

Atturo Tires:  After extensive testing of the Trail Blade BOSS: Green Label, which included racing in Johnson Valley, California at King of The Hammers (this year), the development team determined a 10-percent softer compound was the perfect balance of longevity and off-road performance.

ORX: Have there been any major hurdles in the engineering, production, and/or marketing of the Green Label line? If so, what were they?

Atturo Tires: There were not any specific hurdles. Atturo set various benchmarks during development which were all achieved. We put a focus on real-world environments in the testing program. Before the final production phase began, we utilized pre-production tires in the very trying desert racing environment. Going further, we spent countless hours field testing in a recreational rock crawling environment in places like Moab, Utah. This ensures the tires we are delivering to our customers will stand up to the grueling environments they are using them in.

A Few Off-Road Tire Tips to Remember

ORX: What sort of wheels would you guys recommend for first-time non-DOT tire buyers? Are bead-lock wheels an absolute necessity? Are there any other considerations to factor in besides weight, size, and strength ratings?

Atturo Tires:  We recommend pairing a hardcore off-road tire with an equally hardcore off-road wheel. Off-roaders need to select a wheel that can hold up to the specific challenges their rig is subjected to. A tire that can tackle the toughest terrain, like the Atturo Green Label, should be paired with a bead-lock. That kind of wheel and tire combination provides the ultimate durability on the toughest trails!

ORX: What tips and advice does Atturo have for your first off-road excursion on a set of dedicated non-DOT tires?

Atturo Tires: We want to remind people to make sure they are airing down to proper air pressure. Everyone and rig are different, so dial it for the vehicle, the vehicle equipment, the trail, and driving ability. Really, the most important issue is to always remember to wheel within their comfort level. While the Green Label is a more capable tire that can take them to new places and tougher trails, never drive over your individual ability.

Parting Departure Angles

Grueling product testing in the desert racing wilds and tackling tight lines down canyons of Easter Jeep Safari checked off. Atturo Tires has now confirmed its all-new Trail Blade BOSS: Green Label tire compound is the real deal.

Throughout these staggered events, Atturo Tires’ engineers and product specialists made several revelations. One is that their latest creation is as strong and puncture-resistant as the Trail Blade BOSS D.O.T. version. With zero tire failures in the field during product testing, and Ultra4 Driver Edwin Abd experiencing nary an issue on race day during King of The Hammers 2022, it appears that the Atturo team hit the piston on the head with this one.

Just remember, running a dedicated set of off-road alloys is just as important as having some grippy Green Labels. Make certain you have the right wheels for that high-performance rubber to wrap around.
