It’s big, bulky and and everything that Americans love. The once military, but now civilian Hummer has become a symbol of being big and bad. As we all know, a few years back General Motors discontinued the brand along with Pontiac and Saturn to avoid imminent financial catastrophe.
Lately, we’ve seen that you can’t hold a good model down! For example, Chevrolet has recently revived the Australian made fan favorite Pontiac G8 as the new Chevy SS. In addition, as of late, the rumor mill has been buzzing that the Hummer will be returning to the scene under the GMC nameplate. Via Autoevolution, an anonymous GM designer says that GMC is “in the process of putting together an off-road-oriented model that will follow in the Hummer’s foot steps.” We are inclined to assume that they are referring to an H1 reman, but without more evidence we can do no more than speculate.
Remember what the real Hummer was like? What it could do? How much honest attention it drew? We do - we drove a few!
What we do know is that Autoevolution goes on to describe what GM’s leak calls an entirely new platform, so it is entirely possible that the new “Hummer” will be an all new model. This new platform wasn’t directly correlated to the news of a new Hummer, but it seems like a safe assumption to make. While we don’t have the specifics of when the new model will be coming about or what it will be called we can only hope that they’re planning big things (Literally!). We would hate to see a flop as big as the H3 in this era of ever-growing fuel economy consciousness.
What do you think? Would a “GMC Hummer” be a success and would you put your hard-earned money toward the purchase of one?
