GM Brings Competition for SVT Raptor in the Form of Beefy Colorado

You’re looking for a factory vehicle to take you through the desert, trails, or wherever your imagination allows. You also want to keep the adrenaline pumping at a nail biting, hair raising pace, but basically your only option is the Raptor straight from Ford’s Special Vehicles Team … or is it? Chevrolet would answer that notion with saying “not so fast!” It’s been in the rumor mill for a while now, and we finally have something to show for it. If what GM Authority is reporting is accurate, we must say that the Raptor might finally be staring down some serious competition.

The concept has been years in the making in the heads of enthusiasts, but even to date we’ve had no confirmation from GM on the creation of a full-size Raptor competitor. That line of thinking doesn’t, however, stay true for GM’s Colorado and Canyon platforms. Through the grapevine, sources say that GM will in fact be producing what we like to call the Raptor’s little brother. That isn’t to say that it is inferior, but rather lighter and more agile, but just as well equipped.

It’s an exciting thought because bowtie enthusiasts haven’t really seen a decent performance truck since the Trailblazer SS died off in 2009 and we wouldn’t even consider that to be an off-road vehicle. All the possible power combinations leave the fan club drooling. In 2011 GM gave us a small taste of what we could possibly see in the new sport truck with the Colorado Rally Concept (pictured). While the concept was powered by a 2.8L turbodiesel we can’t be certain of what the future holds in terms of engine options. With a plethora of options, we’re sure that they’ll figure out something lively.

It seems as if Chevy is on to something here. With a platform as capable as the Raptor including a few extra goodies such as a factory winch combined with what we would assume to be a lower price point, imitating the Raptor’s success if not surpassing it would seem to be inevitable. Hopefully GM can get their ducks in a row and strike gold with this new and exciting idea.
