2025 Ford Expedition Tremor: Rear Locker, High-Output EcoBoost Engine, 33s, And More

Ford’s Expedition SUV is all-new for the 2025 model year. One of its most notable trims, from an off-road perspective, is the available Tremor model. This is the first time the Tremor off-road package is available on the Expedition. Consequently, Ford says it’s the most off-road capable Expedition to date. Here’s a look at the new Expedition, and what the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor model brings to the table.

Tremor is fit with the high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. That power is routed through a 10-speed transmission.

The 2025 Expedition Marks The Fifth Generation Of The Nameplate

The Expedition nameplate has been part of Ford’s lineup since the 1997 model year, and the 2025 version is the fifth generation of the nameplate. Ford says it spent over 1,100 hours (that’s over 27 40-hour workweeks) “talking with customers about their everyday lives.” The company says that the input acquired from those conversations influenced how it rethought and redesigned the SUV. Like its predecessor, the 2025 Expedition is available in a standard wheelbase version or the extended-length Expedition MAX. The new Expedition has a fully boxed, high-strength steel frame, and a high-strength, “military-grade” aluminum alloy body.  It can carry up to eight people thanks to its three rows of seating. There are four models available: Active, Tremor, King Ranch, And Platinum.

Ford says the 2025 Expedition Tremor has a 10.6 inch ground clearance, which the company says is better than any other vehicle in the large traditional utility class.

Two Available Engines, One Transmission, Two 4WD Systems

There are two 3.5-liter twin-EcoBoost V6 powerplants available in the 2025 Ford Expedition, depending on the model. They’re both manufactured at the company’s Cleveland, Ohio, engine plant. One engine produces 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, while the high-output version kicks out 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The power is routed through a 10-speed automatic transmission that’s equipped with SelectShift. The transmission offers a wide gear spread, from its 4.696:1 First gear to its 0.636:1 Tenth gear. There are two four-wheel-drive systems available. One is Control Trac and the other is Control Trac with eLocker. The Expedition uses an independent front suspension, independent rear suspension, and it has electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Depending on the model, wheel sizes range from 18 to 24 inches.

Ford’s Split Gate is three-quarters liftgate and one-quarter tailgate.

New Split Gate, With Tailgate!

New for the 2025 Expedition is Ford’s Split Gate. Three-quarters of the gate raises like a traditional liftgate, while the lower quarter folds down like a truck’s tailgate. It’s not a fullsize tailgate, like on a pickup truck, but it’s a tailgate, nonetheless. Ford says it has a maximum weight rating of 500 pounds and there’s an available seatback from the available Cargo Tailgate Manager. The seatback can also turn the tailgate into a serving table. It’s also worth noting that the power outlets in the cargo area are easily reachable from the tailgate. Another cool feature is the available exterior zone lighting. There are four zones that provide lighting, and specific zones around the vehicle can be selected via the infotainment system.

Inside, the Expedition has a 24-inch panoramic digital display that takes the place of a traditional gauge cluster. Other interior features include connectivity to internet services, a sliding front center console, and a new Digital Device Holder mounted to the back of the first-row headrests. The Digital Device Holder clamps around nearly any digital device, from smartphone to oversized tablet.

Tremor is fitted with 33-inch-diameter General Grabber all-terrain tires and they’re paired with 18-inch-diameter wheels.

2025 Ford Expedition Tremor

For those of us who like to go off-road, the Tremor model is the most interesting of the 2025 Expedition lineup. Now, off-road packages are nothing new to Expedition. For example, the 2024 model offered the Timberline package. Some of its features included premium off-road shocks, Ford Trail Control (brake traction control), and 10.6 inches of ground clearance. Additionally, Control Trac with eLSD (electronic limited-slip differential) and 18-inch wheels.

For 2025, the Expedition Tremor replaces the Expedition Timberline. The Tremor package carries over some Timberline features, but adds several more. In fact, Ford says that the new Expedition Tremor is the most off-road capable Expedition ever. Additionally, Ford says that the Expedition Tremor’s 10.6-inch ground clearance is better than any vehicle in the large traditional utility class. Another Expedition Tremor feature is an electronic locking rear differential. If we recall correctly, this is a first for Expedition. The Tremor also includes underbody “shielding” for the front axle, transfer case, and fuel tank. Furthermore, the SUV is fit with 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires and 18-inch wheels.

The Tremor has Raptor-inspired bits, such as the running boards.

Tremor Gets The High-Output Engine, Raptor-Inspired Parts, And More

The Expedition Tremor gets the high-output 3.5-liter V6 engine as standard equipment, and it has a couple of items that have been retuned. Specifically, the suspension and electric power-assisted steering. There are also some Raptor-inspired items, like the running boards and front skidplate. There’s also a set of off-road auxiliary lights embedded in the grille.

The Tremor has several drive modes available, including Rock Crawl Mode. Additionally, the SUVs trail control system includes Trail Turn Assist and Trail 1-Pedal. When activated, Trail Turn Assist reduces the Expedition Tremor’s turning radius by applying brakes to the inside rear wheel during low-speed, high-steering-angle maneuvers. Trail 1-Pedal, which is intended for rockcrawling, combines acceleration and braking into one pedal. Trail 1-Pedal applies the brakes when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal.

You won’t find a traditional gauge cluster in the Expedition. Instead, there’s a 24-inch panoramic digital display.

The Bottom Line

Ford’s take on the Tremor: “Tremor is the pinnacle of Expedition adventure-ready capability,” says Adrian Aguirre, Expedition Chief Engineer. “Expedition Tremor delivers off-road capability and hardware shared with F-150 Tremor combined with Expedition big family and cargo-carrying versatility.”

The Expedition Tremor is the latest player in an increasingly crowded field of off-road-focused large SUVs. Its competition includes the Nissan Armada PRO-4X, GMC Yukon AT4, and Toyota Sequoia TRD PRO. The Expedition Tremor is bringing some unique features to the table, and will undoubtedly be a major player. It’s another option for those who want/need a large SUV that can hit the dusty trail.

Orders for the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition commence on October 24, 2024. The SUV will begin to arrive in dealer showrooms in spring 2025. More Expedition information is available at ford.com.
