It could have been because of the success Ford had with the Raptor, but for 2015, Toyota came out swinging with a full lineup of heavily off-road focused trucks and SUVs with the TRD Pro moniker. Available on the 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra, the TRD Pro package expands on the previously top-tier TRD package with some suspension hop ups, styling cues, and of course the name. The TRD Pro lineup look great and have received a lot of positive reviews since their inception, which means Toyota has struck gold yet again.
Toyota never seems to let a fun new product go without an equally fun advertising campaign to go along with it – and such is the case with the TRD Pro. Last November, Toyota and their Toyota Racing Development (TRD) department built out a 2015 Tundra that was designed to compete in the 2014 Baja 1000 as part of the 8100 class – aka “Stock Full.” Toyota leveraged their relationship with off-road legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart to spearhead the project and then went out and acquired four celebrity drivers; Andy Bell, Jamie Bestwick, Ted Moncure, and Ryan Millen.
Despite having four different drivers, dealing with the various driver changes, and working with a newly built truck, the 8199 Tundra TRD Pro truck won its class at the 2014 Baja 1000 which was an impressive feat and a great way to promote the TRD Pro. For most, finishing the Baja 1000 is considered to be a true success, but winning your class is an entirely different accomplishment.
The truck, which was significantly modified over stock, didn’t make it out of the race unscathed as it received quite a few bumps and bruises including a gash that went from the driver’s door to the end of the bed. Regardless, the team did a great job and really helped promote the TRD Pro brand.
Fast forward to March of 2015, and Toyota is back at it coming up with new and innovative ways to promote their rugged TRD Pro Tundra, this time in Chile. Making their return as professional drivers and Toyota-talent are both Ryan Millen, known for his extensive work as a professional driver with Toyota among others, and Andy Bell, Nitro Circus star and ex-professional freestyle motocross athlete.
The two have great on-screen chemistry as they attempt the unthinkable – drive a completely stock 2015 Tundra TRD Pro through the harsh volcanic landscape of Chile to truly test the truck’s durability.
What follows is a great montage of intense off-road action, beautiful scenery, wildlife in their natural terrain, and a great story about two ordinary guys taking their 4×4 out to the road less traveled. The video has a great flow and serves as a quality ad campaign that is quite a bit different than the standard features and benefits message you would expect from an automaker.
Toyota really seems to be trying to speak to the heart of the off-road community – those that like to go out and explore – and it’s working!
