Last week, the guys at Big Muscle showed us how it’s done desert style. No, they didn’t take muscle cars to the desert, rather they welcomed a new form of muscle into the family at the 2014 Griffin King of The Hammers week. Now check out Part Two of their adventure in this week’s episode above.

When Mike Musto and his crew left off last week, their race rig of choice and driver/co-driver team John Webb and Cliff Behrens were about to start their journey into nearly 200 miles of off-road bliss at the 2014 King of The Hammers Ultra4 race. But if you’re the type of guy who thinks bliss is a car show or doing donuts in a mall parking lot, what the guys encountered was a bit beyond what you might be thinking.

With King of The Hammers being the one of the most difficult one-day off-road races in the world, it provides opportunities for flat-out desert racing, scaling boulder fields and getting a good workout with the winch. But though it’s a lot of work, dozens of teams make the winter trek to Johnson Valley Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area in California to take part in the experience. In fact, every year, more and more people come out to test their driving skills and their rig’s readiness to take on such a substantial feat.

With plenty of experience under their belts, Webb and Behren were able to move up from an 88th-place starting position to a position in the 20s by their second race loop. But even though their pace was good and they had no major malfunctions along the way, the two weren’t able to finish the race before the sun set.

Competitors out on the course and still moving are allowed and even encouraged to continue on. After all, 90 percent of the battle of each King of The Hammers race is finishing.

Crossing the finish line well past dark, Webb and Behrens came in an extraordinary 22nd place out of around 170 teams that started the race–without sponsors.

The American muscle car scene is certainly one to contend with, but with high-performance race rigs growing in number and power at events like King of The Hammers, it’s only a matter of time before the real big muscle gets its fame and glory.
