There’s a brand-new feature coming to the onX Offroad GPS app, and it was unveiled at the 2024 SEMA Show. It’s called onX Navigation, and it delivers turn-by-turn directions. This is a big deal because users of the app won’t need to rely on a third-party navigation app for this feature any longer.

This illustration shows how easy it is to use the new onX Navigation feature for turn-by-turn directions.
About OnX Offroad
If you’re not familiar with onX Offroad, here’s the lowdown. The Missoula, Montana-based company is the leading navigation app for off-road enthusiasts, and it’s built by off-roaders, for off-roaders. It contains over 650,000 miles of off-road trails and roads as well as 852 million acres of public land across North America. This makes it an invaluable tool for those who travel the backcountry, whether a weekend warrior traveling local trails or a long-term overlander exploring remote backcountry. The company offers two onX packages: Premium and Elite. Premium includes features like trail descriptions, difficulty ratings, 3D maps, and more. Elite adds things like public and private property boundary information, landowner info, and more.
The Features Of OnX Navigation
The new onX Navigation feature allows users to build a route, choose a POI (point of interest), or find a location on the map, and then get directions to that location. It’s tailored for off-road use, and it gives in-depth driving directions to chosen destinations, such as points of interest (like a campsite), waypoints, forest roads, and onX Trail Guide-rated trails. All this happens within the onX app. One of the handiest aspects of onX Navigation is the ability to utilize it in Offline Mode (iOS platform only). So, even when you’re out of cell range, you can still access turn-by-turn directions by downloading maps for offline use.
Other features of onX Navigation include audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time rerouting (like, if you miss a turn, it’ll reroute you), and multiple map orientations (landscape, portrait, north-up lock, tilted perspectives, and top-down views). Additionally, you can navigate along user-created routes, and it’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter feature allows you to send the navigation to your 4×4’s in-dash display. One of the benefits of this is that you can search for trails and content from your rig’s in-dash screen.

The onX app is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This allows you to send the navigation to your 4×4’s in-dash display.
OnX Navigation Is Slowly Rolling Out To Users
Val Zolyak, onX Senior Product Manager, says, “We are thrilled to offer our users a solution that allows them to explore confidently without relying on external tools. With onX Navigation, our users will have a more integrated, reliable, and enjoyable experience, helping them focus on the trail ahead and the adventure at hand. With the addition of turn-by-turn voice commands, they can stay focused on the trail when conditions and terrain go from easy to extreme, or the weather comes in and reduces visibility.”
The onX Navigation feature is slowly rolling out to Premium and Elite subscribers throughout this winter. For more information, visit the onX Offroad website.
