The event known as EJS in beautiful Moab, Utah is a bucket-list must-attend off-road experience! This year’s Easter Jeep Safari 2022 is scheduled to take place from April 9 to April 17. Although it was originally conceived for mainly Jeeps, now off-road and 4×4 enthusiasts of all types are participating. You can expect thousands enjoying the scenery, joining in with Red Rock 4-Wheelers scheduled trail runs, checking out all the activities at the Moab 4×4 Expo, and hitting the trails. 

Moab, located in eastern Utah, is a small town that sits near the Colorado River and is split by highway 191. The area is very unique and sits in close proximity to Arches National Park, and Canyonlands National Park. The area is treasured by all recreational outdoor enthusiasts for its amazingly majestic landscapes and unique features not found anywhere else. 

Because of this, and Utah’s friendly OHV policies, the area has become a mega off-roaders paradise and is considered a mecca of four-wheeling recreational activities. This off-road community and supporting industry are also greatly responsible for protecting the environment while maintaining access.

Red Rock 4-Wheelers At Easter Jeep Safari 2022

The Jeep Safari was originally mobilized by the Moab Chamber of Commerce in 1967. In 1982 The Bureau of Land Management began requiring land use permits and insurance. The Red Rock 4-Wheelers Jeep Club agreed to take over the Easter Jeep Safari namesake and formally began running the event in 1983.

Ever since Red Rock 4-Wheelers (RR4W) have done a tremendous job to make this a fun and memorable event going on for decades. Now, generations after generations return year after year. The nine-day-long event features many organized trail runs that showcase Moab but also require individuals to pre-register and meet some very basic requirements. Rule #1, all vehicles must have a roll cage or integral metal roof. Rule #2, vehicles must meet safety requirements for legal road operations. Finally, they recommend carrying basic essentials such as a fire extinguisher, tow strap, first aid kit, spare tire, and jack.

RR4W does allow other vehicles besides Jeep to participate. This includes street-legal 4-wheel drives of all kinds. Rock-Buggies, and full-size vehicles are also welcome but they must be street-legal as mentioned prior. No UTV’s, sand buggies, crawlers or ATV’s will be allowed to participate in the official Red Rock 4-Wheelers organized trail runs but these types of vehicles are permitted in any OHV area provided they meet all state and BLM requirements.

Besides the trail runs, RR4W host a raffle, BBQ dinner, and vendor expo. The RR4W is made up of a community of volunteers whose primary goal is to promote responsible off-road recreation. They work hand-in-hand and support the Blue Ribbon Coalition, Tread Lightly, and United Four Wheel Drive Association. Each of these organizations lead the effort both locally on the ground, and in the courtroom preserving off-roader’s interest at the legal level.

Moab Trails At Easter Jeep Safari 2022

 There are 48 official trail designations in the immediate Moab area according to RR4W. Each Trail is rated from 1 to 10, with 1 being a county-maintained dirt road, and 10 being an extremely difficult trail only recommended for purpose-built off-road rigs. To decide on what trails are right for you, we recommend looking over the RR4W Jeep Safari Magazine for all the critical details.

For every trail, there is a sign designating the trailhead name, rating, and length of the trail. RR4W notes they “attempt to keep the trail rating current. However, weather and usage constantly alter the routes. Heavy but localized rains can change a moderate trail to impassable. It is always wise to obtain the most up-to-date information prior to departing for a trip and be prepared. Remember, turning back is usually an option as well.”

To participate in the Red Rock 4-Wheelers official trail runs, you do need to pre-register beforehand. This organizational component was put in place to limit the number of participants clogging up a single trail. This allow for a smooth run to be completed in a timely manner. RR4W has also prepared multiple packages that select a trail program and give options for individuals. Depending on their level of skill and familiarity they can choose from two different First Timer’s Packages, a Sophomore Package, and a Junior Package. 

During the Safari, RR4W organized trail runs have a designated meeting spot and a designated departure time. Make sure you get there early! Each run is hosted by an individual trail leader and supported by two or three trail gunners. At the trailhead, these folks check you in, and perform a driver’s meeting. This also allows for any last-minute prep to be done such as airing down, removing doors, and disconnecting sway bars. 

Off-Road Industry And Automotive OEMs On Display

The off-road industry manufacturers are greatly responsible for helping grow Easter Jeep Safari into a major annual event. Attendees can expect to see the latest and greatest in off-road vehicles and equipment. Companies helped out the RR4W club by donating huge amounts of products valued in the tens of thousands which are then raffled off. The brands would sponsor organized trail runs making it a lot of fun for participants. This all benefits the M.U.D. Fund (Multiple Use Defense Fund) to support cleanups, maintenance, education, advocacy, and more. 

The continued success and worldwide popularity caught the attention of the automotive industry OEMs. Eventually automakers began making news by revealing new concept vehicles at EJS putting their latest 4×4 vehicles to the test. Jeep is famous for this while many other manufacturers have brought out their models to create a bit of buzz.

Over 150 companies come to display and sell their wares and there are thousands of prizes up for grabs during the Friday night raffle. This takes place in the Old Spanish Arena from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 14 and Friday April 15.

Moab 4×4 Expo At Easter Jeep Safari 2022

While RR4W have been the long time caring stewards of Easter Jeep Safari, EJS has evolved. Other enterprising groups have aimed to make the event bigger and better. For the last several years, Dixie Off Road Expo has been making a positive impact with their Moab 4×4 Expo.  

With two off-road expos in Moab during Easter Jeep Safari, it equals twice the fun for families and off-roaders! This additional Moab 4×4 Expo opens to the public after trail rides, 3:00 Pm – 7:00 PM, April 13 through April 15. The Moab 4×4 Expo location address is 11856 S Highway 191, Moab, UT 84532⁠. Taking place at the Old Dixie 4 Wheel Drive Complex, it is only three minutes down the road from the RR4W Jeep Safari expo. 

Highlights of the Moab 4×4 Expo include the free to play Treasure Hunt.
