In continuing our coverage of the 2017 Dakar, we found a video you’d like to see. In our Stage 4 update, we mentioned a serious issue Carlos Sainz ran into with his Peugeot racecar. Now we have more details of what happened.
Sainz started off the 2017 Dakar with gusto. Stage one netted a fourth-place finish, stage two in third and in stage three, he bumped himself back up to the second-place slot. Having a top-five finish in all three stages was giving him a good ranking in the general standings. Unfortunately, stage four had other ideas. After only thirty minutes into the stage four race, Sainz was already ten minutes behind the leader and Peugeot teammate, Stéphane Peterhansel. About four hours later, Sainz ended up in what was originally described as a ravine.
In the video above, you’ll see it was more of a canyon than a ravine. Sainz came in too hot in a turn and chucked the racecar quite a distance down the hill. Both driver and co-pilot appeared to have escaped any major harm. The Peugeot racecar was brought back up to the trail. After two additional hours, Sainz was driving again and finished the race. There has been no confirmation that Sainz is definitely out of the race but his name is nowhere to be found in the general standings.
We also must note how ridiculous spectators can be. In the above video, you’ll see there are two people standing on the outside of the blind turn that took out Sainz. You’ll also see that the Peugeot went straight at them when it went out of control. Luckily they were able to dodge out of the way in time to not get taken out. Turns out, one of them was recording the race on his phone. Check out their point of view perspective below:
Please, for the love of off-road racing and all that is good in the world, please don’t stand so close to a race course. Especially not on the outside of a blind turn.
Stay tuned for more Dakar coverage and the event continues.
