To compete in the annual King of The Hammers race, you have to be a pretty hardcore person. But beyond that initial spark of enthusiasm, you also have to know what you’re doing if you plan on getting anywhere in one of the toughest one-day off-road races in the world. Shannon and Wayland Campbell epitomize this, spending every free minute working on perfecting their vehicles and their driving skills, both of which pay off more times than not on the KOH course. Shannon Campbell has been racing since 1996, but it wasn’t until 2008 that he became involved in what was at that point a fledgling genre of off-road racing called Ultra4 Racing.

As they say, the rest is history, as now Campbell not only holds many rock racing titles from all over the country, he also holds the title of being a two-time King of The Hammers winner (Campbell took the KOH crown in 2008 and 2011).

Helping wrench on Campbell’s car and cheering him on all the way is Wayland Campbell, Shannon’s teenage son. But Wayland is not just a support system for his dad; he’s also a bonafide off-road racer himself, having competed in the KOH race for the last few years.

A truly unique father and son duo, the Campbells symbolize what the off-road community is all about: hard work, mechanical knowledge and a dare-devil side ready to push you to your limits.

That was never more evident than in the 2014 King of the Hammers race when Shannon Campbell broke down so badly in the main KOH race, that he was forced to pull his vehicle from competition. But even with his dreams of another KOH crown sidelined for the moment, Shannon was all about helping his son cross the finish line. Wayland finished 15th at this year’s race, with Shannon helping on the pit crew.

With hard work and mechanical knowledge on their side, not to mention the amazing team and sponsors they have backing them up, the Campbell team is going to continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the off-road scene for a long time to come.
