Typically, the show Big Muscle on the DRIVE Network features amazing muscle cars and hot rods boasting all kinds of big performance. But what screams power and performance more than the incredible off-road machines that race the annual King of The Hammers race? Nothing! And that’s exactly why this week’s Big Muscle is dedicated to the off-road community! Check out Mike Musto’s look at the unique world of King of the Hammers above!
Anyone who has been to King of the Hammers knows that it might just be the toughest one-day off-road race in the country, but KOH is more than just a race- it’s an experience, something that Musto and his crew quickly found out.
No matter where you helm from, the location of KOH, Johnson Valley OHV Recreation Area about 45 minutes outside of Palm Springs, California, can be a shock to the senses.
The wind hardly ever disappears completely, giving you a nice sandblasted complexion, the mornings and evenings are downright nippy while the afternoons can be perfect shorts weather, and the amount of people packed into the lake bed is just astonishing (nearly 40,000 in 2014). Of course, it’s all dealt with for one fantastic reason- getting to experience the true KOH.
While around 170 teams hit the course this year, it was John Webb and Cliff Behrens who had Big Muscle on their side. And with an LS-based, tube-chassis wielding, super-suspension wearing rig, why not?
But in order to get the true experience, Big Muscle’s trip couldn’t be crammed into just one episode, so you’ll have to wait until next week to get a peek at the actual King of the Hammers race. For now, just enjoy this video filled with the entertainment value of Musto camping in a car trailer, experiencing Webb’s pre-runner, and the organized chaos that is Hammer Town.
