January is drawing to a close, and the 2014 Dakar Rally teams have long ago packed up their off-road machines and suitcases, and headed back home until next year. It was, as always, an action-packed rally covering three countries and half of the South American continent with plenty of drama and breakdowns of both the mental and mechanical sort.
In case you haven’t already heard, the MINI team took the 1-2-3 victory, with 11 MINIs in total competing in the 2014 Dakar Rally. Competitors from Chevy and Toyota teams, as well as many others from all over the world just couldn’t knock the reigning champs off, and there was even a bit of controversy as BMW-MINI bigwigs started calling the shots and slowing one their own team members down to organize the finishing order.
For your extended viewing pleasure, we have offered up a few more videos below, including one that is not what we would call extremely high-resolution quality, but does provide some rather entertaining footage. The other is a collection of in-car camera footage, that provides the viewer with a quite visceral sensation of what is must be like to be inside the car during something as dramatic and challenging as the Dakar Rally.
In the end, 68 percent of the contestants never finished the 2014 Dakar Rally, including famous American off-road racers Robby Gordon and BJ Baldwin. After watching this highlight video at top, it’s easy to see why. Some were saying this was the toughest Dakar yet. What do you think?
And what of the Ford Rangers powered by Raptor engines? Of the pair, one had to drop out of the 5,825-mile, nearly two-week-long race after just the first day, while the second Ranger/Raptor finished in 22nd place out of almost 200 competitors. It’s worth noting however, that the surviving truck, driven by Lucio Alvarez, finished in the top 10 in four daily stages. We’ve included a video below of the Dakar Rangers prepping for the big race.
