SEMA 2013: We Sit Down With Casey Currie

Casey Currie is one of those guys that has made a huge impact in the off-road racing world over the years. With his relatively early rise to success to his continued winning streak and repeated championships, Casey is well on his way to becoming a legend in off-road racing. While he was at the Aeromotive booth during the SEMA Show, we asked him a few questions and found out some keys to his success over the past few seasons.

Off Road Xtreme: What did you think about racing during this year’s Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series?

1L6A0523Casey Currie: “2013 racing was good. We had some ups and downs, but we had a lot of successful finishes. When things went bad, they went really bad. All and all, we finished 4th out of 40 trucks. It’s hard to complain about that. We finished on the podium almost every single weekend, but we’re still looking for that number one spot. I’m never happy unless I’m on top. For me, 4th might as well be last. We learned from our mistakes and we are ready for next year.”

ORX: What do you have planned for 2014?

Currie: “For 2014, we will be running the full Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. We will be doing half of Torc Series, X games, Sturgis, Hot Rod Power Tour, and we will be doing 5 Monster Jam demos at the beginning of year. We are also launching a brand new Jeep, that basically we are taking racing across the country.”

During our conversation Currie mentioned that he basically travels 40 weekends a year. To help cut down on some of that work, they have been upgrading the truck with more reliable parts that are not only proving to last a weekend of racing, but in many instances the entire racing season. One major issue with many of the off-road racing vehicles is the fuel. Not whether they have it or not, but can they get it to the engine? So, we asked Currie about his experience with his fuel systems specifically.

ORX: What type of problems were you experiencing before you switched over to Aeromotive?

Currie: “When we first started getting into racing, we were having problems with the pumps getting hot out of the tank. What was happening was there was so much heat while racing that the pumps would vapor lock on the outside of the fuel tank. So, we went to Aeromotive for help. They have some super trick in-tank pumps that basically keeps the fuel pump cool, which immediately eliminated all of our vapor-lock problems.”

ORX: How long have you been running their pumps and how long do they last?

Currie: “I made the switch to Aeromotive two years ago, before that, every four rounds we were installing new fuel pumps just because we didn’t know how long they were going to last. Now we change them after the season because we want to make sure we have all new parts going into the new year.”

ORX: Any last comments?

1L6A0535Currie: “When we made the switch over to Aeromotive products everything has been great. When we have questions, it is always nice to get answers. And when it came to making more power and making things lighter and perform at a maximum level, the fuel systems we have now are top notch. They’ve done everything in their power so we don’t have any more pump failures. These fuel pumps or filters aren’t going to clog or stop working during a race. Now, we feel much more confident that our truck will finish every single race.”
