The Blue Oval brand used inputs from its racing prototypes that braved the grueling Dakar 1000 for the developments of its Bronco 4600 race trucks. The trucks first competed in the Ultra4 Racing championship back in 2021. This year Ford Performance again achieved an impressive feat at the 2022 King of Hammer Ultra4 off-road race.
Loren Healey and Vaughn Gittin, Jr. took first place in number 2567 Bronco 4600. Truck number 4621 with Lovell Brothers and Roger behind the wheel finished second, and lastly, number 13 Bronco, piloted by Jason Scherer and Bailey Cole, took third place.
The race-spec Ford Broncos dominated King of Hammer earlier this month and won all three podium places. Ford Performance competed in the ULTRA4 stock class series. The team achieved this victory against brutal competition at the popular off-road event held in Johnson Valley, California. These trucks are truly fascinating as they demonstrate the versatility, off-road capability, and tuning potential of Bronco models.
Ford Performance’s every race truck is based on the same stock vehicle platform that underpins the street-legal Bronco. Furthermore, we also find the same 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 motor under the hood of each racer. The power is sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. The Bronco 4600 trucks ride on a race-tuned Fox coil-over shocks setup, which gets pneumatic bump stocks on all four corners along with remote reservoirs. In addition to the stiffer rear axle, these race trucks also get forged beadlock wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich tires.
Ford owns a history of using motorsports to develop and enhance the production specifications of vehicles to be sold in mass. We hope to see more of the high-performance off-road R&D trickle down.
