It is always a pleasure to see a new Tri-star offering hit the streets, but a military-grade Mercedes is one the most eye-catching sights on the road. According to a report by Which Car, the Stuttgart-based automaker might soon introduce a very special version of its G-Wagen. The retro military-spec model will probably be introduced as part of the W464 series.

For now, Mercedes might only offer the W464 series to militaries in Europe. The company will continue building the older G-Class model (codenamed W461), which is currently used by the Australian Defence Force. The new G-Wagen will come with many new features. Mercedes stated that its new W464 series is engineered for “rescue and special operations.”

So far, the German brand has not revealed any details about the new G-Class. However, we reckon that the W464 series G-Wagen will be propelled by the same 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that powers W461. The straight-six powerplant can produce 245 HP of maximum power and 443 lb-ft of peak torque. The new SUV will offer better on- and off-road capability. The motor comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels.

Additionally, the military-spec SUV will allegedly get better payload capacity. It also receives modern upgrades with daylight running lights, LED headlights, and a 24-volt electrical system. The upcoming offering might also retain its live axels. As of now, Mercedes has not divulged whether it intends to sell a civilian version of the W464.

Merc’s W464 series G-Wagen will rival the likes of BMW-powered Ineos Grenadier in the U.S. market. the latter is expected to make its stateside debut sometime next year.
