2022 Tundra Power

The 2022 Tundra offers two different power plants to propel this modern truck into the future. Toyota is proclaiming that power and efficiency have gone way up compared to the prior generation model. The standard i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 provides plenty of low end torque. The other option is a i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid that kicks out almost another 50 horsepower. Yep, that is right! There is no V8 option.

  • Standard i-FORCE 3.5L twin-turbo V6 produces up to 389 horsepower, 479 lb.-ft.
  • Available i-FORCE MAX powertrain produces up to 437 horsepower, 583 lb.-ft.
  • Electronically Controlled 10 Speed Automatic

2022 Tundra PRO Off-Road Features

Toyota’s off-road history was not overlooked when they poured in functional performance aspects of this new truck. All of the new Tundra truck models are offered with available part time four-wheel-drive and can be upgraded with a TRD Off-Road package. The top tier TRD Pro model is loaded with all the advanced features we were hoping for.

Some other available & standard features:

  • Multi Terrain Monitor (MTM)
  • Multi Terrain Select (MTS)
  • Crawl Control which automatically modulates throttle and braking input
  • Electronic Locking Rear Differential
  • Full LED Lighting
  • Auto Adjustment Leveling
  • Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system

The 2022 Tundra sits on a multi-link rear suspension that is planted by monotube Bilstein Shock absorbers on vehicles equipped with a TRD Off-Road package.

The TRD Pro gains in additional off-road performance with 2.5-inch diameter FOX internal bypass shocks setup with an external piggyback reservoir and provides an extra 1.1-inch lift. We also spy a prominent TRD aluminum front skid plate package guarding a beefy front stabilizer bar, and various red painted suspension parts.

Toyota’s Off-road technology features include an automatic and manual leveling function and an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system which adjusts to changing road conditions and enhances the vehicle’s handling. These advanced off-road performance features are borrowed from other glorious off-road capable platforms such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX & LX suvs. So we can expect the 2022 Tundra to be very capable and smooth under pressure.

  • Up to 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity

With all of these details finally released, we are starting to realize the full picture and Toyota’s vision with this truck. We can expect that the manufacturer has brought a legitimate contender to the full size truck market. They are very much aware just how ripe their competition is with Ford’s Raptor, RAM’s TRX, and now the Silverado ZR2 coming to a dealer lot soon. Off Road Xtreme is hoping the third generation 2022 Tundra TRD Pro can go the distance and compete against the other nameplates.

To wrap things up and lead you on a little bit, Toyota has just invited Off Road Xtreme out to San Antonio, Texas to get behind the wheel and test out the new truck platform.  We will be reporting  our thoughts and feeling and also share a tour of the production plant. Stay tuned!
