UPDATED: Event Alert: It’s Going To Get Dusty At The 2019 Baja 1000

UPDATED: 11/21/2019

For just the third time in the storied history of the Baja 1000, SCORE race officials have been forced to delay the start of the BFGoodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts by 24-hours to Saturday morning in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico because of inclement weather.

“Ensenada and the surrounding areas of the Northern part of the Baja California peninsula have been inundated with more than four inches of rainfall over the last three days which has forced us, in the interest of safety, to delay the start of the race by 24 hours,” stated Jose A. Grijalva, SCORE President and race director. “With the storm having passed through, we want to give our racers the opportunity to pre-run on Friday to make their final preparations for the race.

“The course is rugged enough without all of the rain this week making several parts impassable because of flooding and standing water. We have numerous crews out on the course identifying the worst sections that we will bypass or repair as best we can. This will be one of the most challenging races in the history of the world’s greatest desert race.”

The race will still be live-streamed on the SCORE website and the live-tracking will also be available via their website.

It is race week for the end of the 2019 SCORE season with the 52nd running of the Baja 1000. This year’s course takes racers on an 800.5-mile loop starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, but if you are unable to make it south of the border this week, SCORE will have their live stream going on their website.

“The course runs in a counter-clockwise direction after the two-way section to the Ojos Negros area and down along the Pacific Ocean through Uruapan, Santo Tomas, Erendira, Santo Domingo Wash, and San Quintin,” Dominic Clark of SCORE explained. “From there it travels Northeast going by Rancho El Coyote, across and around Mike’s Sky Rancho, down by Simpson’s Ranch. The route then continues up to a speed zone on Highway 3 before going down over Laguna Del Diablo through Morelia Junction down and back up past San Felipe before heading back up through Laguna Salada, then South back through Santa Catarina to Ojos Negros and the finish on the two-way section back into Ensenada.”

“The course goes through two of Baja California’s infamous washes on the east side of the course—Matomi Wash and Amarillas Wash,” Clark continued. “This year’s racecourse also has 17-speed zones for a total of 70.77 miles, three physical checkpoints, and 281 virtual checkpoints plus the finish line.”

Defending Baja 1000 overall winner and BFGoodrich racer Cameron Steele will compete for a second consecutive Trophy Truck victory in a Team C Mason all-wheel-drive trophy truck with Ricky Johnson. He will find tough competition in Ryan Arciero, who has the top starting position after an overall win on BFGoodrich tires at the SCORE Baja 400 in September.
