If you don’t have a side-by-side already, you should probably consider getting one. The UTV market has exploded over the last several years. New products and builds are popping up all over the place. While at the 2019 Sand Sports Super Show, we found ourselves surrounded by great new products aimed at the UTV market.

When there are so many products around you, it can sometimes be difficult to focus on a specific vendor. That was not the case on this particular day. Todd Romano from Speed SXS was gracious enough to spend some time with us and discuss their latest offering. Todd explained, “Answering a lot of questions on the net over the last week has created a lot of controversy. That’s why I’m calling this one ‘the troublemaker.’”

Just The Facts

The UTV contains a 1.0-liter motor putting out 220 horsepower. The four-seater UTV comes with a 120-inch wheelbase. It is 70 seven inches wide. All of this is suspended with custom shock valving and 22 inches of travel. Todd revealed that, “When you go wide you have less CV angle. You also have a better motion ratio on the shock. Our 22 inches of travel doesn’t go through the ground. You still have four inches of ride height at full bump. A lot of people will claim that they have 25 inches of wheel travel. However, the car will have to travel through the ground in order to get it. The wheels may cycle that much, but the chassis cannot.”

Speed SXS’s patented unequal A-arm system is radical and has turned a lot of heads. The system includes their shock to bottom A-arm front steer spindles, as well as patented rear trailing arms with dual plunge race axles; all as standard equipment.

The Speed UTV 77 is the latest brainchild of speed. It came about as a desire to help the aftermarket. Todd shared, “We believe that entering this market helps. We are filling a void for the customer base that exists and wants this chassis. It gives us a lot of opportunity to grow the brand and educate people about what Robby and I do best.”

A two-seat version also exists. Todd said, “The two-seat version maintains the same motor and suspension. However, the wheelbase is changed to a 100-inch wheelbase and is available in widths ranging from 72 or 77 inches wide.” Pricing for the four-seater comes in at $32,000, and $28,000 for the two-seater.

Speed SXS debuted their new carbon fiber race seats at the show as well. The Speed SXS 77 comes standard with five-point harnesses, a fully welded safety cage, roof, and the custom tuned suspension. Additional options including upgraded bumpers and lighting. Todd remarked that, “We tried to make it so that all you have to do is put in the key. There is really nothing that the customer has to do but drive it.”
