Most vehicles in Brazil are much smaller than ones in the US. You won’t find many trucks along the lines of the F-150 or Ram. In most parts of the country it’s a rare Jeep Cherokee or Ford Bronco, except those built in the Sixties and Seventies, but even those are pretty rare. What you’re more likely to see is a sport compact truck like Fiat’s Toro. In February of 2016, Fiat do Brasil (Fiat of Brazil)  released a new version of the Toro with two new engine options.

Fiat Calls It a SUP-Sport Utility Pickup

This is a new market segment according to the company. Fiat says that the SUP segment combines “the strength and characteristics of a truck and all the comfort features and drivability of an SUV.” The Toro looks like a cross between a baby Jeep Cherokee and an even smaller Dodge Ram D50; almost like the vehicles mated.

Taking a Look at the Toro

The barn door-style tailgate with innovative bed extension.

The 16 foot long truck is a four-door model with a bed that’s about five feet long. At the end of the bed is a barn door type tailgate that opens like a set of double doors with a unique fold-down bed extender. The Toro also comes with a tailgate net.

The Toro ships with the buyer’s choice of two engines – diesel or gas. The economy version is a 2.0-liter Multijet diesel that makes 170 horsepower. The gasoline engine is a 140 hp 1.8-liter flex-fuel that in Brazil is called a “bi-fuel motor.”

Both transmissions can be controlled either by a console shifter or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. It’s also got 4WD traction control that Fiat of Brazil calls “Tração 4X4 inteligente.”

Interior Innovations

The 2016 Fiat Toro is equipped with electric power steering which gives a steering feel that the company says is lighter than normal. Want a cold Coke while driving, but don’t want to stop? Just pop open the refrigerated center console that will hold up to four cans. A rarity at this price-point in Brazil is an eight-way electrically-adjustable driver seat. There are also two USB power plugs-one up front and one for rear seat passengers. Another cool addition is the curve-following headlights that sense the degree of turn and react accordingly.

Fiat’s definitely put together a nice little sport pickup for about $22,000 USD. What are your favorite features? Tell us in the comments below!
