Game Watch: Truck Trials 2 Launches For iOS And Android Devices

The love of off-roading is something best experienced in the real world, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have its charms when applied to a virtual one. Our passion is something that’s difficult to replicate in the realm of video games, but fortunately that doesn’t stop people from trying, and their efforts are worth celebrating.

Go airborne or go home!

One recent addition to the subgenre has been a mobile game called Truck Trials 2, which was released on iOS and Android platforms on May 30th of this year. Made by Hondune Games, TT2 costs just shy of $4 and boasts more than 50 levels that center around taking a vehicle and navigating it through increasingly difficult yet interesting situations.

We at Off Road Xtreme caught wind of the game through the /r/4×4 subreddit, and decided to check it out. We found some loose change lying around, bought it, and started playing. Here’s what we found out.

Smokin’ but still rollin’!

The start had us do the typical rigamarole of picking a vehicle (we went with the blocky SUV, the Drover Buffalo, reminiscent of a two-door Jeep Cherokee XJ), buying a few upgrades, and then getting down to business. The setting, such as it was, took place entirely on a farm next to a forest, and was free and clear of any pesky animals getting in our way.

The good? The levels are varied and interesting: climbing over ramps without tipping over, going over rocks without getting stuck, following a path without knocking over cones, and so on. Personalization and upgrades are handled in between levels, and are easy to get hooked on as the changes are simultaneously viewable from multiple angles. Also, buying in-game money costs little real-world money, which is a refreshing break from the normal M.O. of mobile games.

The bad? Well, the sound effects leave something to be desired. The Unity game engine, upon which TT2 was built, isn’t well suited to portraying great graphics, so the cel-shaded-ness can become tiresome after awhile. And the inability to adjust steering input (it’s either full lock or straight ahead) and throttle (again, it’s either WOT or nothing at all) can lead to some frustrating moments at times.

Yeah...this happens a lot on TT2 when you're just starting out.

Now, as to the verdict, we think the game deserves a solid 7 out of 10. It definitely appeals to the off-roading crowd and has some interesting elements, and customization plays a big part in why we like TT2. The farm arena sounds somewhat uninspiring at first, but the levels provide so much variety that we could easily lose several hours just messing around and trying to get on the leaderboards. And for the measly price of $3.99, we highly recommend you check it out!
