We here at Off Road Xtreme are big fans of the first-generation Ford Raptor and really, why wouldn’t we be? Sure, some of us prefer Chevy, Ram, Toyota, etc, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the badassery involved with Ford’s big gamble to make a factory-produced off-roader. Now that the first-generation Raptor has ceased production and attention has shifted onto the second-generation coming in late 2016 (as a 2017 model), some people seem to forget that Raptor owners continue to mod the heck out of their trucks – and the aftermarket continues to create first-gen mods!
Such is the case with Shelby American, a name that needs no introduction when it comes to creating modifications for Ford vehicles – especially Mustangs and F150s. Shelby has made numerous modifications that are a direct fit to the Ford Raptor but just released their latest, greatest, and most expensive mod yet: the Shelby Baja 700 package. Available for the first-gen Raptor, the Baja 700 package comes with a ridiculously large list of standard features to take your Raptor to the next level.
First up are performance options. A Whipple supercharger is added to the potent 6.2-liter V8 in conduction with a new throttle body, injectors, and a new heat exchanger to increase the power output to 700+ hp. To give the truck a different audible note, a Borla exhaust is also added as a standard feature. Thankfully, the Baja 700 kit is not only engine mods as three-inch King Shocks are installed on all four corners (bypass in the rear) and a Rogue Racing (short course star Robby Woods’ company) long travel kit is included as well. To put all that power to the ground, 18 x 9 Fuel matte black wheels are wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All Terrain tires.
Shelby ups the aesthetic value of the Raptor with the Baja 700 kit as well. First up is the Baja 700 branding which can bee seen on the tailgate, doors, and fender vents which go nicely with the stripe package. The same color scheme continues into the interior with a Katzkin custom interior, Shelby Baja 700 floor mats and numbered plates, and finally a three gauge dash pod.
Up until this point, all of the aforementioned parts are “standard” equipment as part of the Baja 700 package. If you really want to up the ante, Shelby does offer a large range of optional features including front/rear bumpers, LED lighting, headers, side steps, and more.
While all of these standard and optional features sound great, they do come at a price – one that your wife and checkbook might not be too thrilled with. The standard package starts at $45,000 on top of the price of the truck which essentially makes a base model Baja 700-equipped Raptor a $90,000 F150. Obviously this package is positioned toward a more affluent demographic, but still, $45,000 does seem rather steep on top of the price of the truck, especially since Shelby retains all off the stock take-off parts too (meaning you can’t get them and sell them to help offset the cost).
Price aside, the Shelby Baja 700 kit does look pretty nice and we are happy to see it actually have some real suspension mods that will improve the truck’s ability to make use the additional horsepower. With only 50 of these trucks being produced, the limited nature of these trucks will make them more sought after years from now. So let us know what you think in a comment below. Would you buy this kit if money were no object? Or would you go a different direction?
