The roar of injected methanol V8 engines can be heard as two metal monsters, Thor and Putte 2 fly over dirt jumps and battle through muddy whoops. It looks like American’s aren’t the only ones obsessed with monster trucks in the video above, as you can plainly see in this wheel-to-wheel racing action from Norway between these gargantuan metallic machines.
Thor the black viking has a more traditional monster truck look, sporting a late model Chevy Silverado body. On the other hand Putte 2 has a blue body similar to that of a Lamborghini Countach. Like their American counter parts, these machines are built on a massive tube chassis with 4-link suspensions. They are powered by supercharged mountain motors (engines with greater than 500 cubic inches of displacement), that run on methanol fuel. For great mobility around the rough dirt tracks four-wheel-steering is used. Putte 2 is powered by a supercharged 540 Merlin engine which produces 1,475 horsepower and is mated to a Powerglide automatic.
This is true off-road tandem racing, a serious competitive motorsport, unlike the freestyle shows of today’s Monster Jam. The style of racing shown here, is close to the original USHRA Monster Truck races of the 1980s. Perhaps seeing real monster truck racing in Norway will launch a revival here in the U.S.A., what do you think? It’s great to see the sport of monster truck racing spreading through out the world.
